To hear and be heard

This project came to fruition after my personal experiences last year of learning about the loss of a couple of men within my wider social circle to suicide. Men that on the outside seemed completely OK. At the same time I was also dealing with my own increase in anxiety and bouts of depression. Upon seeking help I came to realise that I have been trying to deal with these issues for many years on my own. Soldiering on like I was taught to do, telling myself ‘you’ll be right‘. Fortunately it got to a point where I recognised that , I’m not alright . I am grateful for being encouraged to seek advice and help. It has been incredibly helpful learning certain techniques and new practices such as meditation and has made a huge impact on myself and my mindset.

Through all of this I quickly came to realise, even though I thought I was a pretty open person, I actually wasn’t. I couldn’t talk and I certainly wasn’t listening. As a result of my experience I have become passionate about getting the message out there – To Hear and be Heard. To help encourage other men to talk but also to listen to each other as I have come to realise we ALL have issues that need to be lightened.

The simple aim of the 2020 MEN-tality project is to bring together male Australian celebrities and personalities from industries such as sport, music, film and television and the creative arts and for them to share an experience that they may have dealt with themselves or in supporting a mate. To destigmatise the notion that it is un-manly to open up and show vulnerability. I want their stories and words of encouragement to encourage other men to do the same. It is OK to admit that you are not OK.
